Discover Freemasonry In Banbury

In every community, there are men who quietly uphold the values that make a place feel like home, men who lend a hand without being asked, who listen more than they speak, and who strive each day to be just a little better than the day before.

Here at Castle Lodge, we believe these qualities are the foundations of true brotherhood. For generations, our lodge has stood as a place where good men come together to strengthen their character, support their neighbours, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations, with its origins rooted in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles.

It is here that a number of the famous elements of Freemasonry find their roots. In the medieval era, stonemasons often travelled around to find work in different locations. To demonstrate their level of qualification, they would use grips, words and signs in order to distinguish themselves from unqualified builders.

Freemasonry uses building analogies to teach members how to lead productive lives that benefit the communities that they live in. In the medieval era, stonemasons wore aprons and gloves to protect themselves while working on shaping rough pieces of stone, but in today’s society Freemasons meet to build friendships and communities rather than cathedrals and castles.

Are you ready to take a Masonic Journey?

The Masonic Journey is a metaphor for a Freemason's path of personal development and lifelong self-improvement, marked by progression through three distinct degrees and the pursuit of knowledge, virtue, and brotherhood. It involves both external steps, like joining a lodge and advancing in rank, and internal work, such as self-reflection, moral growth, and the cultivation of virtues like integrity and compassion.

The three degrees in UK Freemasonry are Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. After completing these three degrees, a Freemason can pursue additional Orders, Rites and degrees, such as The Royal Arch, which is considered by the United Grand Lodge of England to be part of the third degree. Why not contact us to learn more.

Entered Apprentice

This is the first degree, focusing on the initial initiation and the lessons of self-improvement and morality.

Fellowcraft

The second degree emphasizes education and the continued pursuit of self-development.

Master Mason

The third and highest of the Craft degrees, this teaches the member how to live a wise life.

Master Masons are then eligible to join The Royal Arch (which is considered as the fourth part of a Freemasons journey) in addition to a number of other interesting side Orders and Rites.
